Couples talk about dropping everything and get married on the spot without the hassle of dealing with in-laws, inviting guests and the expense of it all. However, for most of them, it’s just talk. But if you need one more reason to get hitched, here’s one big fat Greek one.
In honor of the release of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, Focus Features is promoting a contest for couples to get married for free at one of the 11 wedding chapels chosen across the country. And just like an elopement wedding, the form is short and sweet only asking for you name, email address, phone number and which chapel you’d like to get married in.
The original My Big Fat Greek Wedding came out in 2002. It was written by an unknown screenwriter named Nia Vardalos who also starred in the film. Fourteen years later, John Corbett, Vardalos and the film’s entire family came together for the second Greek Wedding chapter. This September, the Portokalos family is coming together again for another Greek Wedding in Greece. Vardaos is not only starring in the movie, but directing it too.
But before the movie comes to theaters, a number of lucky fans of the film series will get married courtesy of the upcoming sequel. Couples can choose to get married in Atlanta, Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Diego, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, New York and Seattle. (Surprisingly, Las Vegas is not on the list.)
Shotgun Ceremonies Wedding Chapel in Seattle (the only shipping container chapel on the list that I’m aware of) is participating in the event. After opening the chapel in Pioneer Square in 2010, owner Bronwen Stevenson relocated to the “heart” of the Georgetown neighborhood.
“I started Shotgun Ceremonies Wedding Chapel over 13 years ago to celebrate couples who want to elope in a unique venue!” says Stevenson who had a ‘shotgun wedding’ herself years ago. “Shotgun Ceremonies is a place to elope and come as you are. No judgement, pressure, or expectations — just show up with your marriage license paperwork and we will take care of the rest! We even have Elvis if you’d like.”
Other chapels taking part in the contest include some clever-named ones like Anytime Wedding Chapel (San Diego), Weddings on the Run (Cincinnati), 1 Hour Marriage (Los Angeles) and Instant Elopements NYC (New York City).
Focus Features has posted the promotion on their official website giving couples the opportunity to tie the knot courtesy of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. The weddings will take place on Wednesday, September 6 just prior to the film’s opening that Friday. The weddings will be on a first-come, first-served basis — and there are only a limited number of ceremonies to go around.
You may now kiss the bride.
