In September of 1997, Dav Pilkey became one of the world’s most controversial children’s book writers with the release of The Adventures of Captain Underpants. The book’s bathroom humor and silliness often caused parents and teachers to sigh heavily while their kids laughed themselves silly. And why not? The book was written for them after all. The children’s graphic novel spawned 11 sequels and 15 spin-offs. The books have proven to be so popular; they have been translated into over 20 languages. 80 million of these potty humor books have been sold worldwide.

Fortunately for some, Pilkey went in a different (but equally silly) direction. In 2016 with the release of the first Dog Man book. It too proved to be popular and since then, an even dozen of Dog Man books have been printed with book. The 13th book, Dog Man: Big Jim Begins, is set to be released on December 3, 2024. The release date comes at the perfect time as the first Dog Man movie will be coming to theaters a month later. Until then, enjoy the movie’s first official trailer which came out yesterday. It looks hilarious.

This twisted tale is about Police Officer Knight and Greg, his faithful police dog and how the two had to make awkward adjustments after a freak accident. You see, according to the book, while in surgery the doctors were faced with a dilemma on how to save their lives.  In the end, the doctors chose to fuse the head of the dog on top of the man’s body. What could go wrong? According to DreamWorks Animation, “Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve – and fetch, sit and roll over.” The studio describes the plot as follows:

Petey the Cat (DreamWorks Animation)

“As Dog Man embraces his new identity and strives to impress his Chief (voiced by Lil Rel Howery), he must stop the pretty evil plots of feline supervillain Petey the Cat (Pete Davidson),” Petey’s latest plan is to clone himself, creating the kitten Lil Petey, to double his ability to do crime stuff. Things get complicated, though, when Lil Petey forges an unexpected bond with Dog Man.

“When Lil Petey falls into the clutches of a common enemy, Dog Man and Petey reluctantly join forces in an action-packed race against time to rescue the young kitten. In the process, they discover the power of family (and kittens!) to bring even the most hostile foes together.”

Dog Man is directed by Peter Hastings who directed 2017’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. That movie has an 87% fresh rating. The cartoon also features the voices of Isla Fisher as TV reporter Sarah Hatoff; Billy Boyd as her cameraman, Seamus; Poppy Liu as Petey’s assistant, Butler; Stephen Root as Grampa and Ricky Gervais as Flippy the fish.

Dog Man opens in theaters on January 31, 2025.
