Even after 95 years of Oscar award shows, records are still being broken. 2024 just might be the year where a one nominee could be the oldest winner ever. One film could walk away with the most wins ever too. Some record holders have nothing to lose and just might win again. Here are a bunch of records that could be broken this year.
Movies with the Most Possible Wins
Currently, Ben-Hur, Titanic and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King have won 11 Oscars each. This year, Poor Things has the possibility of joining this list if it wins every category that it is nominated in. However, Oppenheimer could break the record for most Oscar wins as it has been nominated for 13 awards.
Actor/Actresses with the Most Possible Wins
To date, Katharine Hepburn is the only actress to have won four acting awards. This year, Robert DeNiro (Killers of the Flower Moon and Jodie Foster (Nyad) could join an elite group of seven other actors with 3+ Oscar wins. Emma Stone (Poor Things) could join 26 others who have won 2 or more acting Oscars for leading performances. She could also become the second actress to win for both acting and producing in one night. (Frances McDormand became the first one to do so when she won both Best Actress and Best Picture for Nomadland in 2021.)
Possibly the Oldest Winners
Martin Scorsese could become the oldest winner of the Best Director category if he wins for Killers of the Flower Moon. He’s 81. The record holder for has been Clint Eastwood who won the award for Million Dollar Baby. He was a young 74 at the time. However, John Williams could become the oldest winner of a competitive Oscar if he wins this year for Best Score. He’s 92. (James Ivory was 89 when he won Best Adapted Screenplay for Call Me By Your Name.)
The Most Animated Winners
Pixar currently has the most Oscars wins for Best Animated Feature (they have won 11 times out of 18 nominations) and they could have an even dozen if they win again for Elemental. Meanwhile, The Boy and The Heron could become only the second non-English movie to win in the Best Animated Feature category. The first winner was Spirited Away and both movies were created by Hayao Miyazaki. And Robot Dreams could become the first movie in the category with no dialogue to win.
Directors with the Most Wins
This year, both Mark Johnson (The Holdovers) and Steven Spielberg (Maestro) have a chance to join nine other directors who have won the Best Picture Oscar two or more times. Johnson’s first Oscar win was in 1989 receiving Best Picture Oscar for Rain Man and Spielberg won in 1993 for Schindler’s List.
First Indigenous People to Possibly Win
Nominated for Best Actress for Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone could become the first Indigenous woman to win the Oscar for an acting performance. Also, songwriter Scott George, member of the Osage Nation, could win for Best Original Song “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” from the same movie. Incidentally, Thelma Schoonmaker, who is up for Best Editing for the movie, could break away from a 4-way tie of Best Editing winners.
Countries with the Most Wins
So far, Italy has won the most awards for Best International Feature Film. This year, Io Capitano could become the country’s 15th win. Justine Triet could become the first French woman to win in the Best Original Screenplay and Best Director categories if she wins for Anatomy of a Fall. The Zone of Interest could become the first UK movie to win the award.
