Actor Tony Shalhoub won eight Emmy Awards (and one Golden Globes) for his portrayal of Detective Adrian Monk on the series simply called Monk which ran for eight seasons from 2002-2009 on USA Network (and for a brief time on ABC and NBC). Now, 14+ years later, Shalboub and the rest of the Monk crew will star in a new made-for-TV movie on Peacock in December.
“We’re so delighted to have made a movie version of Monk, and we are thrilled that every one of our stars were so enthusiastic about coming back,” says show creator and writer Andy Breckman. “But in coming back, we wanted to do a film that was worthy of our legacy. Mr. Monk’s Last Case is a story that is powerful, emotional, funny, heartwarming, and has something to say about the human condition. And it will be both familiar and surprising.”

In Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, the quirky detective is said to return to solve on last, very personal case which involves his stepdaughter Molly who is a journalist and a bride-to-be.
To refresh your memory of the original show, Adrian Monk served as a detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder for the San Francisco Police Department. He suffered from a nervous breakdown after his beloved wife Trudy was killed by a car bomb which might have been tied to her work as … a journalist. (Bum bum bum!) After refusing to leave his home for four years, his nurse coaxed him into returning to work as a private detective. The end result was on highly entertaining comedy crime show. Although the new movie is said to be his last case, let’s hope that he still has a few more in him.

Mr. Monk’s Last Case also stars:
- Ted Levine (who played Captain Leland Stottlemeyer, the head of the Homicide Division of the San Francisco Police Department in the original series)
- Jason-Gray Stanford (who played the naïve Lieutenant Randy Disher)
- Traylor Howard (who played Monk’s assistant from seasons 3-8.)
- Hector Elizond (who played Monk’s second psychiatrist. His first was Dr. Kroger who was played by Stanley Kamel who had passed away.)
- Caitlin McGee (who plays Molly. The character was originally played by Alona Tal)
- Melora Hardin (who plays Trudy Monk in flashbacks)
- Bitty Schram (who played Monk’s original nurse/assistant in seasons 1-2)
Mr. Monk’s Final Case: A Monk Movie premieres on December 8, 2023 on Peacock. Reruns of the original show can be found on Peacock, NBC’s app and Prime Video.
