You have to wonder if Jesse Banwell really believes what he said or if he was just wanting to get a few more clicks for the TikTok account. As reported on Daily Dot, Banwell posted a video stating that pickle company, Claussen has been selling pickles that are not even real.

“There’s a picture [of a pickle] of course,” says Banwell holding the jar in the video. “But it doesn’t actually say the word ‘pickle’ anywhere on here. I looked at all the fine print as well….“I don’t think it’s a coincidence. There has to be some reason for it. If anybody knows [why,] fill me in.”

And of course, people did. Some were confused as well as to why the word was omitted from the jar others gave sage advice that “pickling” is a term used for a food preparation method. You can pickle just about anything. Including cucumbers, which of course is what we think of most when we use the term “pickle.” To my knowledge, Claussen has not commented on the TikTok video.

“A pickle is a funny thing to perfect,” says Claussen on the company’s website, “but in 1870, when Claus Claussen found himself with too many cucumbers and a crazy idea, you could say the pickle picked him.” So, the notion of simply calling pickled cucumbers “pickles” is not a new idea. Many other brands selling the same food call them that as well.

The question I have for Banwell is, if they are not “pickles” in that jar, than what does he think they are? If he looked further into the “fine print” that jar does state that the main ingredient within is cucumbers. This makes sense since you can’t grow pickles.

This whole fake pickle thing reminds me of a time when people began spreading rumors that Arby’s restaurant chain didn’t actually sell roast beef. Instead, it was believed by some to have been made with an imitation product that was shaped into a beef roast. Snopes.com says that they first heard of the Arby’s rumor in 1997. Of course, Arby’s denied this and there has never been any evidence to suggest that this was the case. Arby’s never seemed to have suffered from this rumor and I doubt that Claussen will either.
