This just might be the summer movie season we’ve all been waiting for with a mix or sequels and original material. To kick things off, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu makes the jump from Disney+ to the big screen on Memorial Day weekend.

The film reunites the fan‑favorite duo for a new adventure that promises action, heart, and plenty of Star Wars nostalgia.

Plus, not one, but two Spider-Man movies, the top ten movies, news about the Oscars and what’s opening this weekend.

MOVIE NEWS

The Mandalorian and Grogu (Walt Disney Pictures)

Fan’s responses to teaser trailers for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu have been somewhat lackluster thus far. However, attendees at CinemaCon® were thrilled watching the film’s final trailer (below). This is The Mandalorian’s first movie, but if Jon Favreau does this one right, it won’t be the last. “I wanted to recapture the feeling of when I first saw Star Wars,” says the director.

The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.

Based on the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is written, directed and produced by Favreau with a script co-written by Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor. It stars Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White. Music is composed by Academy Award®-winning composer Ludwig Göransson.

The soundtrack for the Star Wars movie will be available on Walt Disney Records across all digital platforms May 15. If you prefer vinyl records, the 12-inch vinyl album, featuring 13 score cues, is set for release on June 5, but it is available for pre-order now. Need something a bit more special? A special limited edition Mandalorian helmet-shaped 10” die-cut vinyl, will be out May 22, 2026, the same day as the movie’s premier. It too is available for pre-order.

Disney has posted a short video with Favreau, Weaver, Pascal and “Baby Yoda” each sharing their perspectives. It is worth checking out.

Movie posters are available now to download and tickets for the movie are on sale on Fandango or whereever tickets are sold.

Oscar statuettes

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and ABC have announced that the 99th Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 14, 2027, and the 100th Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 5, 2028. As with recent years, both shows will air live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.

This news comes after it was announced that after the Academy Awards would stream live on YouTube beginning in 2029. (ABC has continually aired the special since 1976.)

Spider-Man swinging around above New York City
Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Sony Pictures)

No doubt Sony Pictures had high hopes when Spider-Man: No Way Home came to theaters, but I think even they were blown away by the movie’s reception. With a storyline that included Doctor Strange and three different Spider-Men, it became the highest grossing film of 2021. Five years later…will it happen again?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes place four years after and much has changed. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is all grown up and living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves. Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he’s devoted himself entirely to protecting his city as Spider-Man. However, as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence. At the same time, a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced. How much can this poor guy take?

Instead of a visit by Doctor Strange, this time around it is the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) who appears. Spider-Man: Brand New Day also stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman and Michael Mando.

Mile Morales, dressed as Superman without a mask hanging upside down.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (Sony Pictures Animation)

In 2027, the webslinger comes back in animated form for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Sony says that it will be the final chapter for Mile Morales.

Hunted by Miguel O’Hara’s Spider Society and betrayed by his friends, Miles finds himself in the darkest corners of the Spider-Verse in search of a way home. Knowing that his family has been not only fractured but also endangered by his calling, it’s a race against the clock for Miles to travel across the wildest reaches of time and space to fight for and reunite everything he holds most dear.
