Actress Sally Field has done a lot of things from playing in TV’s The Flying Nun to winning Oscars for her work in Norma Rae, Places in the Heart, Lincoln and an Emmy for the TV miniseries, Sybil. What does she do for an encore? Talk to an octopus. All kidding aside, her new movie, Remarkably Bright Creatures looks great.
Also, this week: News about Nate Bargatze’s new Mr. Mom-ish movie, Top Gun’s return to theaters and last weekend’s top movies.

MOVIE NEWS
Sally Fields Stars in Heartfelt Netflix Movie, ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’

Sorry for the late notice! A potentially fantastic movie makes its debut this weekend and I haven’t even heard of it until recently. Directed by Olivia Newman, Remarkably Bright Creatures is based on Shelby Van Pelt’s novel of the same name. It was on the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list for over 64 weeks.
Sally Field stars as Tova, a widow who works at a local aquarium finds joy again when she forms unlikely bonds with a giant Pacific octopus and Cameron (Lewis Pullman), a wayward young man who comes to town in search of family. Together, they uncover a mystery that will lead them to a life-changing discovery and restore their sense of wonder.
Judging from the trailer (below), Remarkably Bright Creatures appears to be told from an octopus’ point of view looking out from the aquarium. Marcellus (the octopus) is voiced by Alfred Molina. The movie also stars Colm Meaney, Joan Chen, Kathy Baker, Beth Grant and Sofia Black-D’Elia.
Remarkably Bright Creatures on Netflix on May 8, 2026.
Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick Coming Back to Theaters for 40th Anniversary

Not to make you feel old, but it has been 40 years since Top Gun opened in theaters. If you still have the “need for speed”, you can catch it again (and 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, which I thought was superior) at your local theater for one week only beginning May 13.
For the first time ever, Top Gun will be presented in cutting-edge immersive formats, delivering a fully upgraded, high-octane experience for a new generation of moviegoers and longtime fans alike. Tickets for both films are on sale now.
Top Gun Day is May 13. Those who see the movies on that day will receive a limited-edition collectible print at participating theaters while supplies last.
Audiences will have the chance to see Top Gun showcased in premium large formats, and immersive technologies including Dolby Cinema®, and for the first time ever presented in D-BOX®, 4DX®, ScreenX® and IMAX. Audiences will be able to experience the film’s legendary aerial sequences, iconic soundtrack, and unforgettable performances with unprecedented scale, clarity, and intensity.
COMING ATTRACTIONS
The Breadwinner
Opens in theaters on May 29, 2026

I like the clean comedian Nate Bargatze. And I’m not alone. In 2024, Bargatze was the highest-grossing stand-up comedian. He’s also the host of ABC’s The Greatest Average American game show, which isn’t too bad. However, I don’t know if that can be said for his first feature film, The Breadwinner.
When Katie Wilcox (Mandy Moore), the “ultimate mom”, creates a household invention that leads to a once-in-a-lifetime deal on Shark Tank and a prolonged business trip, it us up to her husband, Nate (Bargatze) to take over the household. Nate has to figure out how to keep the house from (literally) falling apart. He and his kids soon learn that while he may not do it like mom, he can figure out how to do it his way.
“Let the Dad Era Begin” says the movie poster for the movie which comes to theaters just in time for Father’s Day. This movie has a lot to live up to as it will no doubt be compared to 1983’s Mr. Mom that starred Michael Keaton. That movie comically emphasized that dads can (and should) take on more of the household chores rather than leaving them all up for the moms. And honestly, I think the “dad era” began back then.
This movie might surprise me, but at first glance, it appears to be another movie about a clueless and/or stupid guy who has to be told that he needs to step up around the house. With that said, it has a great cast including Moore, Colin Jost, Zach Cherry, Martin Herlihy, Kate Berlant, Kumail Nanjiani, Will Forte and the cast of Shark Tank.
So, what do you think about this movie?
