Years ago, Mike Williams was a seemingly successful comedian, but he wasn’t happy. Then, an opportunity came along that he couldn’t pass up. Next year, the movie Rescued will be released that is about these events. Speaking of surprises, Warner Bros.’ Supergirl debut performed lower than expectations. Deadline suggests that the superhero flick will end up costing the studio $125 million. What went wrong? Read my review below.

First Look: ‘Rescued’

Biopics seem to be more popular than ever these days. On Sunday, The Wrap reported that Michael, has passed Oppenheimer as the most successful biopic of all time. The Michael Jackson story has made over $977 million at the box office so far.
Today there is news about another biopic about another Michael. It’s a story that you may not know anything about, but it is one that you should.
Rescued is about Mike Williams who made the journey from comedian to humanitarian serving in the Dominican Republic.

Who is Mike Williams?
I wasn’t familiar with Mike Williams before today. It turns out he shares his name with many others, including a former professional football player, a musician, and another comedian who is also a magician. But Rescued is about Mike G. Williams, a successful clean comedian with a 30-year career. But what makes Williams unique is that he has spent much of that time overseas with CUPS Mission, the outreach he founded in 2010.
In Rescued, Mike William’s life takes an unexpected turn following the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Overwhelmed with what he sees, he and his family leave everything behind to move to the area to serve vulnerable children and families in need.
But the road is a bumpy one. Mike’s dedication is further challenged as he tries to help a young Haitian refugee caught up in sex trafficking. He becomes discouraged as he is plagued by bad dreams, and corrupt systems at every turn. He even considers taking his family back to America. But take heart! We already know that this movie ends on a happy note.

An Inspired Man, an Inspired Story
After watching some of his routines on YouTube, I discovered that Williams is funny! He has been featured on Dry Bar, toured with Christian musicians, won a “Comedian of the Year” GMA Dove award and has written a number of books. But turning away from that world and essentially becoming a missionary had to have been hard. However, I suspect a lot of the comedian’s humor will come through the biopic as well. I mean, it has to, right?
“When I heard Mike’s story, I knew I had to be a part of it,” said Director Trey Reynolds who wrote the script and directed Rescued. “This film is for every person who has ever felt the pull to do something greater than themselves and wasn’t sure if they were brave enough to do it.”

Rescued stars:
- Kristoffer Polaha (Jurassic World: Dominion) and Sarah Lancaster (Chuck) as Mike and Terica Williams
- Gilberto Ortiz and Genesis Cristal Estevez Jimenez play Daniel and Judith, the young couple who partners with Mike to change the community
- Jordan Rice plays Joann, the Haitian refugee who changes Mike’s life forever
- The film also stars Stelio Savante (Sarah’s Oil), and Manny Perez (Sound of Freedom)
“What began as one family’s act of faith – repairing a contaminated water well, feeding refugees in a garbage dump, and starting a community center for children – grew into a lasting mission as local residents joined together to transform their community,” says Jack Eason. He’s not only an Executive Producer of the film; he’s also the Executive Director of CUPS Mission.

Producer Darren Moorman agrees.
“This is exactly the kind of story that reminds us of what is possible when ordinary people choose to live for something bigger than themselves. Mike Williams stepped away from personal success to answer a deeper calling, and the ripple effect of that decision is still being felt today.”
I’m looking forward to watching the trailer when it becomes available, but honestly, I’m not thrilled about the title. I hope that the filmmakers will consider changing it to CUPS Mission’s core mission statement instead: “Rescue. Transform. Repeat.” Doesn’t that sound more intriguing? Today, the outreach provides Christian discipleship, family counseling, nutrition, medical care, and vocational education. This same foundation also works successfully in the Malawi, Africa project and has seeded another project in Mexico City.
Rescued will be released sometime in 2027. Stay tuned.

RECENT MOVIE REVIEWS
I Swear

Unlike some biopics, I Swear presents a realistic portrayal of John Davidson’s frustrations, setback and ultimately, celebrations. It could be a depressing film, but it’s not.
Michael

If I had to come up with only one word to describe this biopic it would be “sad”. The story isn’t all bleak, but Michael Jackson spent his whole life looking for happiness and I doubt that he ever found it.
The Sheep Detectives

This is an adult story that children are welcomed to join in. Much like a classic animated Disney tale, The Sheep Detectives is truly a story that all ages will enjoy.
Supergirl

Parents wanting to take their little girls to see Supergirl to enjoy some “girl power” should think again. Maybe the next one, but in this PG-13 film, Kara is hardly a role model. Not only that, but Supergirl is quite violent and intense.
