It’s that time of the year again to celebrate the best of the best movies (The Academy Awards) and chastising the worst of the worst (The Golden Raspberry Awards). The Oscar nominees were announced early this morning while the Razzie nominees were announced yesterday.
For those wanting to see more diversity at the Oscars, you’ll be happy with this year’s nominations. You’ll also be happy to see that not a single sequel film made it on the list. However, you might be surprised by the number of movies that made the list that you didn’t even know were created. That’s because some of these films were screened in select theaters as well as screening services. It’s pretty surprising just how many of these films were screened on Amazon Prime, Netflix, Paramount+ instead of appearing in movie theaters.
There are a number of other surprises as well. Steven Spielberg’s version of West Side Story received seven nominations. Three of Disney’s animated films are up for Best Animated Feature Film. The Denmark film, Flee is nominated for Best International Feature Film, Best Animated Feature Film and Best Documentary.
While it may not be shocking to learn that Bruce Willis made the Razzie list, but this year, the created a special category just for him! Although it is shocking to see the likes of Amy Adams, Jared Leto, Ben Affleck and Scott Eastwood being nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award. The movies getting the most attention there include Diana the Musical, Dear Evan Hansen, Space Jam: A New Legacy and The Woman in the Window.
The Oscars will air live on ABC on March 27. The Razzies will be given out on “Oscars Eve” on March 26.
