The Best and Worst Movies of 2020

Award shows have not gotten a good track record since the COVID-19 pandemic began as ratings have been falling at record lows and things are not looking that great for the Academy Awards which will be handed out next month. Maybe its because nobody is feeling much like celebrating these days or perhaps we are all so very burned out with “virtual” events. But as they say, the show must go on.

But what makes this year an especially odd one when it comes to movies is this year’s collection of nominees. Showcasing the best of the best, the Oscar nominations were announced Monday morning. On the other end of the spectrum, the Golden Raspberry award nominees, highlighting the worst films of the year, were announced the night before. As it turns out – some of the same nominees are on both lists! I could be wrong, but don’t know if that has ever happened since the Razzies began in 1980. The movie that is collectively getting the most nominations of the two lists is Hillbilly Elegy. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams, the movie currently has a 25% “rotten” score by Rotten Tomatoes, a rare finding for an Oscar contender. To be fair, the movie also scored an 85% “fresh” audience score, which makes you wonder if they were indeed watching the same movie. Many critics have stated that the acting was good despite a bad script. Glenn Close has been nominated for both Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Worst Supporting Actress.

Another issue working against the Oscars this year is the shear number of films nominated that many people have not seen or even heard of. Some could only be found on streaming services. That doesn’t mean that they are bad, but the list of contenders isn’t exactly giving people a reason to tune in either.

As far as the Razzies go, the movies making the biggest stink are Dolittle, Fantasy Island, Music and something called All 3 “Barbie & Kendra” Movies.

The Oscars will air live on ABC on April 25. The Razzies will be given out the night before on April 24.
