While Dick Van Dyke did a variety of things early in his career from appearing in Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway to hosting the CBS Morning Show on TV. But he literally made a name for himself when he began starring in his own sitcom in 1961.

In 1960, Carl Reiner wrote and produced a pilot for a show to be called Head of the Family. The story was about Robbie Petrie, a TV writer and was based on his own life. Reiner starred in the pilot which appeared on an anthology series called The Comedy Spot. However, the pilot was unsuccessful and the show was dropped.

Sometime later, a producer who had seen the pilot told Reiner that the show could be successful if the role was played by someone else. So, Reiner re-worked the pilot, gave Dick Van Dyke the part, and it was a hit – but not at first.

The Dick Van Dyke Show debuted on CBS in 1966. Van Dyke plays Rob is the head writer for The Alan Brady Show. His co-writers are Maurice “Buddy” Sorrell and Sally Rogers (Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie) and the show’s producer was Mel Colley (Richard Deacan). Waiting for Rob back home is his wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore), son Ritchie (Larry Mathews) and neighbors Jerry and Millie Helper (Jerry Paris and Ann Morgan Guilbert). Reiner also played Alan Brady, but he was unseen (he didn’t appear in front of the camera until season 4).

Winning Over Audiences

The sitcom was similar to I Love Lucy in that many of the episodes featured music and dancing performances that worked within the storyline. Despite the show’s great scripts and casting, The Dick Van Dyke Show was not a runaway hit. According to Nielsen, the show ranked in 80th place when it debuted on Tuesdays at 8 p.m., but gradually won over the audience when the show was moved to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.

The Dick Van Dyke Show ran for five seasons. During that time, the show was nominated for 25 Primetime Emmy Awards and won 15. Van Dyke continued to work for CBS appearing in The New Dick Van Dyke Show (1971), The Carol Burnett Show (1977), The Van Dyke Show (1988) and Diagnosis Murder (1993).

Beginning as a radio sitcom for CBS in 1948, Our Miss Brooks could be found simultaneously on TV beginning in 1952. Interesting, the radio show outlasted the TV series by one year.

In the show, Eve Arden plays Madison High School teacher Connie Brooks who later teaches at an upscale private school. The show balanced Brooks’ relationships with her students, colleagues and principal Osgood Conklin (Gale Gordon). Arden later played a principal herself in both Grease movies.

The Emmy Award-winning series ran for 130 episodes. In and out of the classroom, it was a well-loved series. Arden received an honorary membership of the National Education Association and received an award from the Teachers College of Connecticut’s Alumni Association in 1952 “for humanizing the American teacher”. She was able to present a realistic portrayal of a competent woman working in a profession that often did not receive the recognition it deserved. Our Miss Brooks was even adapted for the big screen in 1956.

Pushing Daisies is one of TV’s oddest TV series. The comedy/mystery series isn’t only unique with its storytelling, but also with its look and feel. Described as a “forensic fairy tale”, the show stars Lee Pace as pie-maker Ned who has a gift of bringing the dead back to life (although usually temporary). It also stars private investigator Emerson Cod (Chi McBride) who used Ned’s “gift” to question victims who were murdered. Kristin Chenoweth plays waitress Olive Snook and Anna Friel plays Chuck who used to be dead. Chuck’s aunts are played by Ellen Greene and an eye-patched Swoosie Kurtz.

Despite solid reviews, the series was cut short after just 22 episodes. Even so, Pushing Daises was nominated for 17 Primetime Emmy awards and won seven for directing, supporting actress (Chenoweth), music composition, editing, art direction, costumes and makeup.

For many Saturday Night Live appearances, Larry David played the role of politician Bernie Sanders. Many thought that he nailed the performance and there might be a good reason for that.

In an episode of PBS’ Finding Your Roots, which appeared on this day, both men appeared together to take their own DNA tests to see what famous person they might be related to. As it turns out – they were related to each other! David and Sanders are actually distant cousins.

Developed by Peter Berg, Friday Night Lights was inspired by H. G. Bissinger’s nonfiction book and the 2004 movie of the same name. High School football is a big deal in the small town of Dillion, Texas. Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) has his work cut out for him as he serves as the team’s coach. In the sports drama, Eric’s wife, Tami (Connie Britton), serves on the school’s faculty.

Friday Night Lights was praised for his authenticity. It was even filmed on location and hired local extras. The show dealt with a lot more than school life too. The show dealt with a variety of topics including family values, racism, drugs, abortion and more.

While appreciated by critics and fans alike, Friday Night Lights just couldn’t drum up good ratings. The show ran for two years on NBC before the network cancelled it. However, due to passionate fans, NBC was able to strike a deal with DirecTV to co-produce the show for three more seasons. The agreement allowed DirecTV to air the new episodes to their customers months before NBC would show them to everyone else.

There might be a second life for Friday Night Lights as it was reported in 2024 that a reboot of the series was in development the original showrunner Jason Katims. The home of the new show will be Peacock if it all comes together as planned.
