Movie Monday: There's a New He-Man Coming to Town

Today we tackle the topic of Amazon MGM’s take on Masters of the Universe (the first live action film about He-Man since 1987), investigative talking sheep and a pair of best friends who go on one last journey before they leave high school forever. Masters of the Universe

Opens in theaters on June 5, 2026

He-Man is probably older than you think. Mattel began developing the action figure in the 1970’s but he and the rest of the Masters of the Universe didn’t hit store shelves until 1981. Each action figure was packaged with a mini comic book to help explain who they were.

He-Man’s first foray in animation came in 1983. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was the first daily animated series created specifically for syndication. The Filmation show ran for two years. She-Ra: Princess of Power began airing in 1985 and the long-awaited live action Masters of the Universe movie came to theaters two years later. The movie starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. The cast also featured future Friends star, Courteney Cox, St. Elsewhere star Christina Pickles and Dr. Shrinker’s Billy Barty.

Cannon Films had high hopes for the 1987 movie, but it did not fare well with critics or film-goers. A sequel had been written but it was turned into the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, Cyborg which was released in 1989. It did even worse.

This summer, Amazon MGM Studios will release a new live action adventure starring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man. The rest of the cast includes Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Charlotte Riley. Kristen Wiig serves as the voice of “Roboto” and apparently, there is still room for Jared Leto and Idris Elba.

The Sheep Detectives

Opens in theaters on May 8, 2026

This movies looks so clever. Hugh Jackman plays a shepherd who is so devoted to his heard of sheep that he reads to them every day – murder mystery stories. So when George turns up dead, it’s up the sheep to discover who dun it.

Based on the Leonie Swann’s novel, Three Bags Full, The Sheep Detectives features an amazing cast of humans and humans voicing animals. The list includes Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Tosin Cole with Hong Chau and Emma Thompson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, and Rhys Darby.

Forgotten Island

In theaters September 25, 2026

Forgotten Island is about two lifelong best friends has been created by … two best friends. Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, the directors of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, team up again to tell the story about two senior graduates who experience an adventure on the mysterious island of Nakali. H.E.R. and Liza Soberano lend their voices for the characters of Jo and Raissa.

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie

In theaters August 14, 2026

Just what we need, another Paw Patrol movie. Well, at least your kids think so. And honestly, you could do worse even with this strange storyline. The pups find themselves on hidden island after their ship gets caught in a big storm. And wouldn’t you know it? The island is inhabited by dinosaurs. The movie also features something for moms – a new song by the Backstreet Boys.

Streaming on Prime

Thor and The Hulk team up again (sort of) in Crime 101. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, and Halle Berry. It’s “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes (89%).
