Kristin and Dax Make ‘Family Game Fight’ Worth Watching

Not wasting any time and right on the heels of Summer Olympic Games, NBC will premiere another summer games of their own literally right after the Closing Ceremony of the Summer Olympics this Sunday. While not the refined dignity of the Olympic Games, Family Game Fight! Is more in line with Ellen’s Game of Games. In fact, the new show was inspired by The Ellen DeGeneres Show where at one time or two, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard were guests and showed off their competitive sides during a goofy game. Here, the couple not only host the new game show, but they play it as well.

Family Game Fight pits one family against another and each of them “adopt” Kristen and Dax to compete with them. No, they won’t be playing Scrabble or Monopoly. Here they will be playing wacky games within elaborate sets. Basically, the show is a modern version of Beat the Clock. It’s silly and over-the-top but unlike Ellen’s Games of Games, this is one is actually tolerable to watch because the audience is, believe it or not, a little more toned down. On Ellen’s show, the incessant screaming of admiring fans is just too much to bear.

The episode I watched for review pitted the Jex family (four sisters) against the Bruin Bros (four guys who are great friends). Naturally, the Jex family got Dax while the other got Kristin. The first game of the night, “Between the Sheets” involved both teams sitting together in a bed guessing how many items the star couple guessed correctly by pulling out items from under the sheets in their own bed while blindfolded.

The next game, “Brain Freeze” had team members make a list of items in a grocery store or an office while one member was in the “cooler.” When that team member came out, they would make guesses on what their team members came up with. Any item that they said was not on the list, the other four plus the star, got doused with ice and water. The third game, “Pie Rollers” had the stars describing everyday items with as few words as possible much like the classic Password. However, if the team member guessed wrongly, they got a pie in the face.

The team that won the first three rounds move on to the final bonus round where Dan and Kristin have to give out clues to a variety of objects vocally, drawing and acting. However, their stage spins around and so they have to go from one form of playing to the next without any breaks.

Overall, I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch this show, but I am surprised that for how silly this show is, it was actually enjoyable to watch. Bell and Shepard are adorable and frankly, make for great hosts. I certainly would want to come over to their home for game night. They have been a couple since 2007 and have been married since 2013. These two clearly love each other and appreciate each other’s wit. The fact that they join in and even “sacrifice” their dignity with some of the challenges shows just what good sports they are.

Family Game Fight! Debuts on NBC with a series premiere on Sunday, Aug. 8 at 10:30 p.m., immediately following the Closing Ceremony of the Summer Olympics. The series makes its time-period premiere with an all-new episode on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 9 p.m.
