This Day in Pop Culture for February 26

2005: Halle Berry Accepts ‘Razzie’ for ‘Catwoman’

Created in 1981, The Golden Razzberry Awards is a tongue-in-cheek award ceremony for each year’s worst films. On this day in 2005, guests of the award show were treated to a surprise acceptance speech by Oscar winner Halle Berry who “won” the Worst Actress Razzie for her work in the Warner Bros. flop, Catwoman, which was nominated for seven awards including Worst Film. In her good-natured acceptance speech she said, “It was just what my career needed. I was at the top and now I’m at the bottom.”

1975: The ‘Today Show’ Airs First Live Kidney Transplant

Although some will argue that it was a publicity stunt, it was a publicity stunt for a good cause. On this day in 1975, Dr. Samuel Lee Kountz performed a kidney transplant live on national television. The good doctor performed the surgery during NBC’s The Today Show as a way to raise awareness. It worked. It is estimated that 20,000 people called the network offering to donate one of their kidneys as well. (Image: Pixabay)

2015: The Dress

It was about a week before a wedding in Scotland when Cecilia Bleasdale took a photo of a dress that she had intended to wear to her daughter’s wedding. Little did she know that it would become a viral sensation. Her daughter posted the image on Facebook which sparked a debate between her friends. Some saw the image of a white dress with gold lace while others saw a blue dress with black lace. It was on this day in 2015 that a friend of the bride posted the image of the dress on her Tumbler blog giving the debate over to a larger audience. That post saw up to 840,000 views per minute. The next day, the retailer, Roman Originals, sold out of the dress within 30 minutes. They also confirmed that the dress was indeed black and blue in color. Soon, “The Dress” was being talked about on morning news shows all over the world. While the debate continues on, there is no scientific consensus for why the dress could be seen so differently.
