2020 Oscar Nominations

The Oscars 2020

Surprising or not surprising depending on your feelings for the film, Joker is in the lead for most nominations for the 2020 Academy Awards which were announced this morning. The R-rated film featuring one of Batman’s most iconic villains received 11 nominations including Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, and Actor. Perhaps we can look forward to more obscure rants from Joaquin Phoenix?

The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are tied for second place with 10 nominations each.

Scarlett Johansson is in running for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Marriage Story) as well for Supporting Role (Jojo Rabbit), Al Pacino and Joe Pesci are both nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Irishman and the South Korean film Parasite is nominated for both Best International Feature Film and Best Picture.

While it is no surprise that Tom Hanks is nominated for his supporting role as Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, it is surprising that the film did not receive any other nominations. It is also surprising to learn that the highest grossing animated movie of all time (Frozen 2) is not in the running for Best Animated Feature Film. And with all of the hoopla with Beyonce’s song from The Lion King (“Spirit”), it was not nominated for Best Original Song. Of course, no one is surprised to learn that Cats received no nominations at all (but it is a shoe in to win a Razzie or two).
