1981 – Harrison Ford Starts a Legacy with ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’
Based on a story by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman, Raiders of the Lost Ark was the start of Indiana Jones’ adventures. Next to playing Han Solo in Star Wars, Indiana Jones is Harrison Ford’s most famous role. Bringing back the love of the old movie serials, Raiders is considered one the greatest films ever made which inspired a bunch of copycat movies.

Harrison Ford donned his signature fedora for the first time on this day in 1981 for the film, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Steven Spielberg directed Raiders, which became an instant hit. It is the first of five films in the series. Set in 1936, Ford played Indiana Jones, an archaeologist and a college professor who believes that every relic he finds belongs in a museum.
When learning that Nazi German forces are excavating at Tanis, Egypt, Jones know that Adolf Hitler is after the Ark of the Covenant. (Hitler believes that the Ark will make his army unstoppable.) On the way to Egypt, Ford reconnects with his old flame, Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen). The two team up with Jone’s excavator friend Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) and the race for the Ark is on.
Raiders of the Lost Ark was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won four Oscars for Best Art Direction, Film Editing, Sound and Visual Effects. It was followed with the prequel, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, three sequels (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) and the prequel TV series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles not to mention the Indiana Jones and the Forbidden Eye ride at Disneyland.
1942: Anne Frank’s Diary

For her 13th birthday, Anne Frank received a red-and-white checkered autograph book. She decided that it would become her diary.
1939: Baseball’s Museum

The National Baseball Hall of Fame opened in Cooperstown, New York where it is said was the birthplace of the sport.
1990: Mariah Carey’s Album

Mariah Carey released her debut album. It topped the Billboard 200 album chart for 11 weeks. In 1991 it was the best-selling album in the U.S.
1972: Popeye’s Opens Its Doors for the First Time

Though not available in all 50 states, Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen opened its first store in Arabi, Louisiana by Alvin C. Copeland Sr. who originally called the restaurant Chicken on the Run. Today, it is America’s second-largest chicken fast food restaurant chain behind that Colonel from Kentucky.
Despite what many think, the chain was actually named after Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle from the movie, The French Connection, not Popeye the Sailor Man. Ironically, the chain later developed a partnership with the animated character, but that agreement with King Features Syndicate ended in 2006. It is interesting to note that Wimpy’s restaurants, named after the burger-loving character from the cartoons, opened its doors in the UK in 1954.
