Some days in pop culture history are filled with fun events to look back on fondly. April 20th is not one of those days. In fact, some of America’s darkest events happened on this day.

A few of the memorable yet tragic events that occurred include one of the world’s largest oil spills, a horrific school shooting and the explosion of “the most powerful rocket ever built”. Fortunately, a few good things happened on April 20 too.

Some have described Deepwater Horizon as an ultra-deepwater, dynamically positioned, semi-submersible offshore drilling rig. Built in 2001 and operated by the BP company, the rig helped to drill the deepest oil well in the world with a vertical depth at 35,050 feet.

After Deepwater Horizon was in operation, monthly inspections were held without fail for the rig’s first 40 months. However, after that time frame, it is estimated that 25% of the required inspections were not performed.

On the day of the explosion, a geyser of seawater shot up 230 feet into the air. That was followed by an eruption containing a mix of mud, methane gas and water. The gas ignited into a series of explosions. To prevent an oil spill, the blind shear ram device was activated but it failed to plug up the well. The explosion on the rig was so intense, the fireball could be seen from 40 miles away.

Sadly, 11 workers lost their lives and another 17 survived but not without injuries. The blazes could not be extinguished for two days and the well continued to gush oil making the event the worst marine oil spill in history.

In 2016, Mark Wahlberg starred in the Lionsgate movie, Deepwater Horizon which chronicled the tragic events.

Danica Patrick has always had an interest in car racing since she was a young girl. So, she moved to England when she was a teenager to find better training for the sport.

In 2002, Patrick returned to the states driving for the Rahal Letterman Racing Team, which is owned by Bobby Rahal and David Letterman. Her first Indy 500 event took place on May 29, 2005, where she was the fourth female driver to compete in that race since 1911.

Dominated by men in the sport of car racing, 26-year-old Danica Patrick made pop culture history on this day when she won the Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Monteigi in Montegi, Japan, making her the first female Gran Prix winner.

The SpaceX Starship rocket was called “the most powerful rocket ever built” with a mission to provide human transportation to Mars. The rocket had its first full test flight from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas. In just four minutes, the rocket exploded. Since then, SpaceX’s victories have been hit or miss with a lot more tests to be performed in the following years.

For over a year, high school seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, planned for a shooting spree at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado. 13 students and one teacher lost their lives and another 23 students suffered injuries. The attack ended after the two shooters died by suicide.

Columbine was not the first school shooting to occur in the U.S. but because of its planning and media coverage, it has been deemed a “turning point in public awareness of school violence”. In fact, since the summer of 2025, it is estimated that Columbine has “inspired” over 70 copycat attacks. To this day, school shootings continue to be a problem in the U.S.

Woody Allen not only wrote the script for Annie Hall (with Marshall Brickman), he starred in it and directed it too. In the romantic comedy, Allen plays a man trying to figure out how to overcome his failures with his relationship with Annie Hall, played by Diane Keaton. The film also stars Tony Roberts, Carol Kane, Paul Simon, Shelley Duvall, Christopher Walken among others.

Although Allen has become a controversial figure in recent years, this film has been marked as one of his best and is often listed as one of the funniest movies ever made.

Annie Hall was nominated for five Academy Awards and won four Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress (Keaton) at the 50th Academy Awards in 1978.
