Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson learn that some bad decisions can come back to bite you in Cape Fear, a new dramatic thriller series coming to Apple TV this summer. The show is based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel, The Executioners. Although the source material is older, this isn’t a dull story. It has been adapted twice before as two feature films in 1962 and 1991, and it really made an impact.
Bosley Crowther, a longtime reviewer for The New York Times, once described the 1962 Cape Fear as “one of those shockers that provokes disgust and regret.” He wasn’t wrong. Parts of the film are tough to sit through, yet the story continues to pull you back in.

Originally, Steven Spielberg had planned to direct the 1991 remake. After some ruminating, he turned the project over to Martin Scorsese. Spielberg felt the material was too violent altogether. Even so, he didn’t walk away entirely. He still stayed involved as a producer and chose to remain uncredited.
Although disturbing, these were big movies. Audiences and critics responded positively, hence, the films didn’t do too shabby with ticket sales either. Judging by new the trailer, Apple’s Cape Fear looks just as disturbing as the two films that inspired it.

This summer the psychological thriller returns as a ten-episode limited series — roughly five times the length of either movie. Surprisingly, both directors return to Cape Fear as executive producers.
The story involves happily married attorneys Anna and Tom Bowdon (Adams and Wilson) who receive devastating news that Max Cady (Javier Bardem), a notorious killer who they are responsible for putting behind bars, has been released from prison.

The teaser trailer hints that the Bowdons didn’t follow every rule during the original case. And so, their past is back to haunt them as Max wastes no time announcing his return to civilian life making it clear that he wants revenge.

Nick Antosca created the new series and serves as an executive producer. His previous work — The Act (2019), Candy (2022), and A Friend of the Family (2022) — shows how well he handles dark, character‑driven stories.
Also on board is Morten Tyldum. (He was nominated for an Oscar for directing The Imitation Game.) He directed the pilot for Cape Fear and serves as an executive producer. Finally, the story is brought to life with the help of Joe Anders, Lily Collias, Malia Pyles, and CCH Pounder.
The first two episodes of Cape Fear premiere globally on Friday, June 5, 2026, with new episodes dropping every Friday through July 31, 2026.
