There was a time when the new fall TV season was a really big deal. Each network geared up for it presenting a large roster of new sitcoms and crime shows promising to become the season’s next big hit. But few survived.
Times have changed. Even before the first streaming services, traditional TV networks began exploring the notion of debuting new series outside of the fall season – and not just as mid-season replacements either. They’ve also become savvy by investing more into their shows that have a proven track record and experimented less with more questionable shows. Traditional TV is not dead (yet), and networks are still dishing out new shows, some of which look very promising. Even so, only a handful of them are debuting in September. Here’s what you can look forward to in the coming months:
SEPTEMBER

Universal Basic Guys
Debuts on September 8 at 8 p.m. on FOX
FOX has done very well with animated comedies since The Simpsons debuted and the network is so proud of this new one, they have already given a second season for Universal Basic Guys before the first season even starts! It’s also the first new show out of the gates this September.
Universal Basic Guys centers on two brothers, Mark and Hank Hoagies, who lose their jobs to automation and are given $3,000 a month in a new basic income program. Now they’re using their free time and free money to find purpose in a world where they’re no longer needed.
The voice cast includes Adam Malamut voicing for both Mark and Hank Hoagies, Talia Genevieve, Fred Armisen and Ally Maki.

High Potential
Debuts on September 17 at 10 p.m. on ABC
Based on the French series, Haut Potential, the comedy/drama High Potential centers on Kaitlin Olson as a single mom “with an exceptional mind” and an “unconventional knack for solving crimes” much to the chagrin of her partner who is a by-the-book type of detective played by Daniel Sunjata.
The show is written by Drew Goddard known for the NBC’s former hit comedy, The Good Place and the movie The Martian. The show also stars Judy Reyes, Javicia Leslie, Deniz Akdeniz, Daniel Sunjata, Amirah J, and Matthew Lamb.

The Golden Bachelorette
Debuts on September 18 at 8 p.m. on ABC
The Golden Bachelor not only surprised viewers with its kinder and thoughtful version of the regular dating show, but possibly the network too. According to ABC, over 43 million people watched the show’s debut last fall. There was less name-calling and at times, touching conversations between the women.
No doubt that ABC hopes to see similar ratings with its debut of The Golden Bachelorette. The show focuses on a “second chance at love” for one senior woman who has big plans for the two dozen men who are eager to make a love connection with her.

Matlock
Debuts on September 22 at 8 p.m. on CBS
The old Andy Griffith series, Matlock was pretty popular during its day and CBS hopes to see its new reboot a revival success. But not every reboot is a winner, which probably explains while the network keeps trying to distance itself from the original show while still embracing it.
Kathy Bates plays this new Madeline “Matty” Matlock who teases that her last name is like the name of an old TV show. According to CBS, Matty “decides to rejoin the workforce at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within” which sounds very much like the original. Ah, but THIS Matlock is said to have a need to rectify wrongs of the past. And this new firm features much younger associates in the form Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, David Del Rio and Leah Lewis.

Rescue HI-Surf
Debuts on September 22 at 8 p.m. on FOX
Rescue HI-Surf will at least attract new viewers from the get-go due to the lack of clothing and chiseled abs of its cast. (There’s not an ugly one in the bunch.) But don’t write this one off as a Baywatch rip-off just yet. From the trailer, it appears to be a more realistic series and according to FOX, the series has partnered with the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) supporting their “Lifeguards First” campaign to see these heroes receive the title of “first responder” so that they can receive the same benefits that are currently available only to police officers, firefighters and EMTs.
The series is from John Wells (Shameless, The West Wing and ER) and stars some new faces: Robbie Magasiva, Adam Demos, Kekoa Kekumano, Arielle Kebbel, Alex Aiono and Zoe Cipres.

Brilliant Minds
Debuts on September 23 at 10 p.m. on NBC
Brilliant Minds is inspired by the very real physician Oliver Sacks whose book, Awakenings was adapted into 1990’s award-nominated film of the same name. Zachary Quinto plays the fictional Dr. Oliver Wolf. How much of this new series will be based on the good doctor’s real cases is unknown. NBC says that the show will follow a “larger-than-life neurologist and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier – the human mind – while grappling with their own relationships and mental health.” The series also stars Teddy Sears, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alex MacNicholl, Tamberla Perry, Spence Moore and Aury Krebs.

Murder in a Small Town
Debuts on September 24 at 8 p.m. on FOX
Based on Edgar Award-winning nine-book series by L.R. Wright, Murder in a Small Town stars Rossif Sutherland as a former police detective who moves to what he hopes is a quiet coastal town. But wouldn’t you know it? This town is full of secrets. FOX says that “even in this seemingly idyllic setting, [murders] continue to wash up on his shore.” This show looks particularly high brow for FOX, and that is probably a good thing. The series also stars Kristin Kreuk as Karl Alberg’s new love interest and town librarian.

Doctor Odyssey
Debuts on September 26 at 9 p.m. on ABC
After ABC brought over 9-1-1 from FOX, the network is debuting Doctor Odyssey, a brand-new Ryan Murphy series which sounds like similar over-the-top storylines that take place aboard a luxury cruise ship. Joshua Jackson plays Max, who along with his staff, “works and plays harder,” according to the network. “It’s all-hands-on-deck as [this] small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.” The series which brings back Don Johnson to weekly TV also stars Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale.

The Summit
Debuts on September 29 at 9 p.m. on CBS
After 23 years of Survivor and 20 years of The Amazing Race, CBS debuts what it hopes to become the network’s next big reality game show. Hosted by Manu Bennett, The Summit stars 16 strangers who will journey through the New Zealand Alps, each carrying an equal share of $1 million dollars in their backpacks. The goal is to reach the peak within two weeks in order to win the cash that they carry.
But CBS hints that no every player will make it as they will need to work together of survive the “dangerous terrain, unforgiving Antarctic winds, heart-pounding challenges and gut-wrenching eliminations on their way to the peak.” The contestants of Survivor look soft in comparison. “Tracking them along this journey is the ‘Mountain’s Keeper’ who will surprise the trekkers with brutal twists and force decisions that complicate an already grueling ascent.” If the group fails, all of the prize money will be lost.
OCTOBER

Scamanda
Debuts on October 9 on ABC
Not much info has been given about the ABC News Studios documentary series Scamanda which is based on the No. 1 podcast of the same name. However, we do know that it will tell the story of Amanda Riley — a wife, mother, blogger and Christian — whose tragic cancer tale captivated thousands of followers. “But Amanda has a secret that she’s dying to keep, and after an anonymous tip to an investigative reporter, her own words may prove to be her downfall.”

His challenges continue at home as this finds himself still parenting his adult son described by CBS as a “brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband.”
NOVEMBER

St. Denis Medical

The (hopefully) best is saved for last as St. Denis Medical, a mockumentary in the style of The Office and Parks and Recreation is about an “underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity.” The series has brilliantly cast Wendi McLendon-Covey as Joyce, a former surgeon of oncology and current executive director; David Alan Grier as an emergency department doctor and Allison Tolman as the supervising nurse in the ER. The series also stars Kahyun Kim, Mekki Leeper, Kaliko Kauahi and Josh Lawson.
