Chia Pets. Are they a thing of beauty? An interesting science project? A hit of nostalgia? Maybe they’re all three. They have been made fun of and in their own way, they make fun of others. It’s a curious thing how these terracotta creatures remain relevant after all these years, but while the Pet Rock has been long gone, Chia Pets aren’t leaving the landscape any time soon. Perhaps the most curious thing is knowing that this year, Chia Pets is introducing three new horror movie-themed “pets” including Wednesday Addams. Just in time for Halloween.

In case you’re unaware, a Chia Pet is a terracotta figure where chia seeds can be “planted” on and grown. Nobody seems to know who created them originally. In 1977, Joe Pedott, owner of Joseph Enterprises (and maker of The Clapper) visited a housewares show in Chicago. While there, he learned that a very popular item during the holiday season were these terracotta wonders that were imported from Mexico. But the buyer wasn’t making any money with them. But Pedott was impressed, so he bought the rights.
The very first Chia Pet was created under Pedott was actually a human head called Chia Guy. It wasn’t until 1982 with the release of Chia Pet’s Ram that “Ch-ch-ch-chia!” got popular. Over the years, the company has made different figurines using the likenesses of animals (turtles, pigs, puppies) and cartoon characters (Homer Simpson, Scooby-Doo, Shrek) and famous people (Barack Obama and Bob Ross).

In 2018, Joseph Enterprises was acquired by NECA (National Entertainment Collectibles Association), a leading creator, marketer, and global distributor of licensed consumer products. This year, the company is introducing three new horror-themed “pets” including The Addams Family’s Wednesday and Thing along with Scream’s Ghost Face.
Weirdly, these new terra cotta characters join the wide collection of Chia Pet® horror products, including Michael Myers from Halloween, Chucky from Child’s Play, Pennywise from It, Gizmo from Gremlins, Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas and Elvira “Mistress of the Dark.”
The Addams Family Wednesday Chia Pet® borrows Jenna Ortega likeness.
“Picture the delicate tendrils of green life unfurling around the black dahlia all under Wednesday’s vigilant gaze. This Chia Pet transcends the ordinary, embodying the intricate dance between life and decay found in nature. It is more than just a decorative piece; it is a testament to the enigmatic beauty of contrasts.”

The Addams Family Thing Chia Pet also comes straight from the hit Netflix series.
“Extend a hand, metaphorically, as you embark on the extraordinary journey of planting Chia seeds, adding water, and witnessing the marvel of Thing’s growth.”
Ghost Face® Chia Pet is probably the first Chia Ghost.
“Be prepared to scream in delight when you see the Ghost Face® Chia Pet®! Have a thrilling blend of horror and amusement when you plant your chia seeds, water, and watch the terror grow! Just like the Scream franchise, you can reboot your Chia Pet® indefinitely by simply washing and replanting!”

According to NECA, each handmade terra cotta pottery planter comes with one packet of Chia seeds good for three plantings, a convenient plastic drip tray, and a list of instructions. They say that in just one-two weeks, your Chia Pet will achieve maximum growth. Each can be washed and replanted indefinitely.
You can see the company’s entire collection at Chia.com. Chia Pets® are also available at Walmart, Fred Meyer, Menards, Meijer and of course, Amazon.
Sadly, Joe Pedott passed away earlier this year at the age of 91, but one of his most lucrative business brands lives on.
