Joel McHale Leads the ‘Animal Control’

Believe it or not, while it seems like comedian Joel McHale has been popping up everywhere these days, he was once just a normal guy. He got his start in the entertainment world in 1993 when he interned for KING-TV’s local comedy show, Almost Live making an occasional appearance now and then. Soon, he was part of the cast. Now look at him. He has appeared in numerous TV series and movies, sang on The Masked Singer, hosted the Card Sharks game show and the cooking completion show, Crime Scene Kitchen. In 2016, he starred in 22 episodes of the CBS comedy, The Great Indoors. The guy never stops. This year, McHale not only stars in the new FOX comedy series, Animal Control, but he also serves as the show’s executive producer.

Described as FOX Entertainment’s first wholly own live-action comedy, the single-camera series follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not. McHale stars as Frank, an opinionated and eccentric Animal Control officer. FOX describes his character as one who never went to college “but is still the most well-read person in the room.” He’s a former cop who tried to expose corruption in his department. Those efforts got him fired. However, he discovered new talents with his new role at Animal Control having an almost superhuman ability to understand animals. Humans…not so much.

In the new series, Frank is assigned a new partner and optimistic rookie, Fred “Shred” Taylor (newcomer Michael Rowland). They both report into their sweet-natured and endearingly awkward boss Emily Price (Vella Lovell, who was one of the best things about NBC’s short-lived comedy, Mr. Mayor). Amit Patel (Ravi Patel) and Victoria Sands (Grace Palmer) are also partners in the Animal Control office – though they could not be more opposite. Rounding out the precinct is veterinarian Dr. Summers (Alvina August), receptionist Dolores Stubb (Kelli Ogmundson) and Templeton Dudge (Gerry Dee), an Animal Control officer from a neighboring precinct with a real chip on his shoulder.

With episode titles such as “Weasels and Ostriches”, “Cougars and Kangaroos” and “Rabbits and Pythons”, Animal Control debuts February 16 on FOX at 9 p.m.
