EPCOT at Walt Disney World has just announced that the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opens next month and all I can say is…I am Groot. Located in the new World Discovery neighborhood, this new ride is a lot of “firsts” for Disney. It will be the first roller coaster at EPCOT, it will be the first reverse launch coaster for a Disney park and it will be the first Walt Disney World attraction built on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. (The first GOTG attraction by the way was Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! at Disney’s California Adventure Park which opened in 2017. It took over the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction.)
As may know, EPCOT has been undergoing a huge makeover with the “science-y” part receiving most of the changes. One of those changes is creating World Discovery where you’ll find this new “Marvel” at the Wonders of Xandar pavilion (another first – an “other-world” showcase pavilion).
“This thrilling new family-friendly coaster matches the “grandosity” and fun of the blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy films, featuring those lovable cosmic misfits – Rocket, Groot, Drax, Gamora and Star-Lord. The attraction is another major milestone in the ongoing transformation of EPCOT and debuts as part of the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary celebration,” states Disney in a recent press release.
According to legend, Xandarians traveled from their homeworld in the Andromeda galaxy to Earth – or Terra as they called it – to build this pavilion for us earthlings so that we can learn more about their people and their advanced technologies. But then the Guardians arrive and chaos ensues. However, before they get there, you’ll be able to view the Galaxarium, a sweeping planetarium-style space showcasing planets, stars and other intergalactic wonders that connect Terra and Xandar. You’ll also be able to encouter the Xandar Gallery discover more about the Xandarian people, culture and history through specially crafted displays and projections.
Other interesting things about this new attracton:
- It will be one of the longest fully enclosed coasters in the world, housed in one of the largest show buildings ever constructed for a Disney theme park.
- By volume, four Spaceship Earths would fit inside the attraction’s massive new show building.
- Academy Award® nominee Glenn Close reprises her role from “Guardians of the Galaxy” as Nova Prime, the leader of Xandar and commander of the Nova Corps.
- A Starblaster will stand outside the Wonders of Xandar building, the first full-size version of this Xandarian ship ever built.
The movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes to theaters May 3. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opens at EPCOT on May 27.
