Both ABC and NBC have done well during the summer months in recent years thanks to their clever alternative programming. NBC pretty much dominates with America’s Got Talent and ABC’s “Fun and Games” productions like Celebrity Family Feud and Holey Moley and get huge ratings. But other than Big Brother, CBS doesn’t fare too well with splashy or silly competition shows. Each summer they bring out a new show with a new host but they keep getting the same disappointing returns.

The casual game people play on their phones, Candy Crush, got its own show with Mario Lopez in 2017. The next year Kevin Hart tried his best with the obstacle course show with the redundant title, TKO:Total Knock Out. Then last year, poor Tim Tebow’s Million Dollar Mile was yanked from its regular time slot and moved to Saturday nights due to horrible ratings.

This summer CBS is trying again with yet another wacky game show with host Keegan-Michael Key. Game On! is based on a award-winning U.K. series known as A League of Their Own. Here’s the concept: The show pits two teams of three, captained by tennis champion and entrepreneur Venus Williams and Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski, alongside comedians Bobby Lee and Ian Karmel and rotating sports stars, comedians and celebrities, against each other in over-the-top physical challenges, absurd trivia and epic field competitions. What could go wrong?

For as weird as this all sounds, from watching the preview of the show, it does look like it could be some crazy fun. The debut episode features special guests Gabriel Iglesias and pro basketball player J.R. Smith. The competitions for the night include kicking a field goal at the Colosseum during an L.A. Rams game, a battle of strength against the strongest man in the world and a soccer drill with musicians Mark McGrath, Coolio and Macy Gray.
Game On! premieres on Wednesday, May 27 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
