For those who have had the pleasure of experiencing Mickey’s Philharmagic at one of Disney’s theme parks, you’ll be glad to know that Disneyland Resort has finally received its own copy of the attraction which has just opened its doors for the first time today! It’s a great addition to the park’s 90th birthday celebration for Mickey and is expected to stick around after all of the birthday candles are blown out.
Located in the Sunset Showcase Theater in Hollywood Land the attraction is one of the few that is not based on a movie, but rather, iconic Disney characters and unlike the former MuppetVision 3D attraction that used to be housed there, Mickey’s Philharmagic fits the “land’s” theming better. Don’t get me wrong, MuppetVision was a great attraction and still lives on in Florida’s Disney’s Hollywood Studio’s theme park, but it always seemed out of place to me. Besides, it was taken out in November of 2014 to make room for a Frozen stage show. Those hoping the attraction would come back after the show’s run were disappointed when it became a Disney movie preview destination.
Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Florida was the first to host the Mickey attraction opening in October of 2003 followed by Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005, Tokyo Disneyland in 2011 and Disneyland Paris last October.
Guests are handed 3D “opera glasses” and the attraction begins like a Disney short cartoon with Donald Duck asleep and Mickey rushing to wake him as they have a show to put on. Donald finds Mickey’s conductor baton and his Sorcerer’s Hat and decides to try his hand at leading the orchestra concert. To his surprise and our delight, he’s sucked into a 3D dream world of classic Disney animated musical sequences including “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast, “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid, “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” from The Lion King , “You Can Fly” from Peter Pan and others.
