It’s that time of the year again to celebrate the best of the best movies (The Academy Awards) and chastising the worst of the worst (The Golden Raspberry Awards). The Oscar nominees were announced early this morning while the Razzie nominees were announced yesterday. Ironically, some films have been nominated for awards for both organizations, but for different categories. For instance, Ana de Armas, the star of Blonde (Netflix’s biopic about Marilyn Monroe) has been nominated for an Oscar while Xavier Samuel has been nominated for a Razzie for Worst Actor in the same film. For the movie Elvis, Austin Bulter has been nominated for an Oscar while Tom Hanks has been nominated for a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor. (Hanks is also nominated for Worst Actor for Disney’s “live action” version of Pinnochio.
Other surprises this year include 2022’s most successful movie of the year, Top Gun: Maverick is nominated for Best Picture, but not for best director. Tom Cruise is not on the list of Best Actors either. The same thing goes for this year’s Avatar: The Way of Water. Disney, which is often a shoe in for best animated shorts, full-length films and best original songs only has one animated film contender: Turning Red. It’s a good film, but it is up against a strong list of other contenders. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios is proud to see Angela Bassett’s nomination for Best Actress for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Meanwhile, The Golden Raspberry Awards is getting flack for nominating young Ryan Kiera Armstrong for worst actress in Firestarter.
The 95th Academy Awards will air live on ABC on March 12. The Razzies will be given out on “Oscars Eve” on March 11.
