Disney+ Reveals the Future President
Gina Rodriguez appears to be a triple threat for a new series for the Disney+ streaming service. Rodriguez not only serves as an executive producer for Diary of a Future President, but she also directed and guest-starred in the first episode. The show was inspired by creator Ilana Peña’s childhood and is produced by Gina Rodriguez’s I Can and I Will Productions.
Formerly titled Diary of a Female President, the new 10-episode series is told with a narration from a 12-year-old, Cuban-American girl’s diary as she navigates the ups and downs of middle school and begins her journey to become the future president of the United States who looks and sounds a lot like Rodriguez.
The family comedy stars up-and-coming actress Tess Romero as Elena, an unabashed, ultra-observant, pre-teen with a strong point of view, who walks through the world with purpose and confidence. Charlie Bushnell, who makes his acting debut in the series, plays Bobby, Elena’s mischievous older brother. Selenis Leyva stars as Gabi, Elena and Bobby’s sharp and loving mom. Michael Weaver plays Sam, a lawyer at Gabi’s firm who is in the beginnings of a relationship with her. Gina Rodriguez has a guest-starring role as adult Elena, the president of the United States.
Diary of a Future President debuts on Friday, January 17 with new episodes beling released every Friday thereafter.
